Ceiling insulation in Beaconsfield & Cardinia Shire.

R5.0, R6.0 and R7.0 batts (Earthwool, Bradford, Knauf) plus blown-in cellulose for awkward roof shapes. NCC 2022 / NatHERS 7-star compliant, VIC Energy Upgrades rebate-eligible, AS/NZS 4859 certified. Retrofit existing homes or first-fit new builds.

Ceiling insulation we install.

  • Knauf Earthwool R5.0 / R6.0 / R7.0 — recycled-glass batts with ECOSE bio-based binder. AS/NZS 4859.1 certified, ICANZ member brand. Our default. ~$28–$42/m² installed.
  • Bradford Gold / Optimo R5.0 / R6.0 — Australian-made glasswool, solid value brand. ~$25–$38/m².
  • Knauf Earthwool Polyester (acoustic-friendly) — non-itch fibre, suits asthmatic homes, slightly higher cost. ~$32–$45/m².
  • Blown-in cellulose (Insulshield, GreenStuf) — 85% recycled paper with borate fire-retardant. Fills cathedral ceilings, awkward truss runs, dropped soffits. ~$20–$30/m².
  • Knauf Earthwool R5.0 ceiling roll — large continuous roll for warehouse-style trusses. ~$24–$36/m².

Why R5.0 minimum, R6.0–R7.0 recommended for Beaconsfield.

Beaconsfield, Officer Upper and the Berwick microclimate cop colder winters than the broader Melbourne average — we routinely see 1–3°C overnight minimums in July–August. NCC 2022 sets R5.0 as the Climate Zone 6 minimum for ceilings, and NatHERS 7-star new builds typically need that or higher. We push customers to R6.0 or R7.0 on cold-microclimate sites — the extra $1–$3/m² pays back in 2–4 winters through reduced gas heating.

VIC Energy Upgrades (VEU) rebate process.

For owner-occupied or rental Beaconsfield homes with existing ceiling insulation R2.0 or lower (or no insulation), the VIC Energy Upgrades program rebates ceiling-insulation upgrades through accredited installers. Typical rebate covers 50–70% of the install cost. The paperwork:

  • We assess existing insulation at the free site visit (often a 5-minute roof-cavity check)
  • We confirm VEU eligibility against the activity register and your property type
  • You sign a single VEU customer authorisation at quote acceptance
  • We install, lodge the certificate creation, and the rebate is netted off your invoice
  • No upfront cash from you for the rebate — it's all administered through the accredited installer

Honest install practice — why we don't over-stuff batts.

Batts get their R-value from still air trapped in the fluffy fibre structure. Compress an R5.0 batt into an R3.0-sized cavity and it performs like an R3.0 batt — you've paid for R5.0 and got R3.0. We size the batt to the joist depth, not the rated R-value, even if that means a more expensive thicker batt. The cheap operators stuff oversized batts because it's faster on site; the homeowner pays for it forever in heating bills.

Downlights, exhaust fans, and the 200mm clearance rule.

AS/NZS 3000 requires 200mm clearance from non-IC-rated downlights and unflued exhaust fans. We use approved downlight covers (Australian-made Tenmat or similar) to maintain the thermal envelope without leaving fire-risk gaps. About 60% of Cardinia Shire ceiling retrofits we audit have insulation pulled back from downlights with big cold zones around each — we fix this properly.
